Scattered cloud taking the edge off the glare, with a faint WNW drift with the barometer flat. Start the search at Festuca Lake along the first drop-off and weed lines. A slow day overall; the night is the best of a quiet lot. Scale down and fish slowly. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Festuca Lake is one of the Thunder Bay District waters in Ontario. Elevation runs to 334 metres. Around 52 hectares of surface means several distinct areas to work. The perimeter runs near 6.3 km, so plan the walk before you start. Manitouwadge is the closest place, 48 km off. Then Longlac, 49 km, and Geraldton, 58 km. No county line comes close, which keeps the paperwork simple.
We hold no depth figure for this one. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Reported across Thunder Bay District: cisco, blackfin cisco and rainbow smelt. County records show the wider picture rather than this one place. Festuca Lake responds to conditions more than to tactics.
In an average year July sits at 16°C and January at -18°C. This is a two-season water: locked, then wide open. Expect a solid lid for months and a thaw around early May. Ice clears near early May and comes back about mid November in a typical year. The strong weeks are the first after break-up and the last before the freeze. Anyone fishing Festuca Lake regularly works to that calendar.
Nothing in our records says who may fish here. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. No made access appears within a short radius, so plan to park on a verge and walk. One rod, a handful of hooks and floats, and a few small lures are enough for this water. Where the road in crosses private land, ask first. A polite question at the farm gate opens more banks than anything else. Kagiano Lake, 4.5 km away, makes the obvious fallback. For Festuca Lake in particular, ask before you travel.
