An even grey lid over the water, with calm air over the water with the glass holding level. The water to cover at Head Lake is the calm side of the wind. Quiet conditions all day, with the evening marginally better. Scale down and fish slowly. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

Timiskaming District in Ontario is where Head Lake sits. Country round the bank runs to mixed forest. The water covers some 14 hectares, so pick a bank rather than trying to cover it all. There is roughly 2.1 km of shoreline here, which is a short walk end to end. Supplies mean a trip to Haileybury, 26 km off. Further out sit Temiskaming Shores (28 km) and Ville-Marie (33 km). No border sits close enough to matter.
We hold no survey for this water; read the slope of the shoreline instead. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. Survey and observation records for Timiskaming District include brook trout, northern pike, yellow perch, Iowa darter and walleye. These are county-wide records, so not all of them will be in this water. On Head Lake the first feature you find is usually worth a session.
Average temperature peaks around 18°C in July and bottoms out near -16°C in January. The year runs cold to warm and back, with clear transitions. Hard cover is dependable here; it goes around late April. On average, late April opens the water and late November closes it again. The strong weeks are the first after break-up and the last before the freeze. Head Lake runs to its own calendar within the local pattern.
We hold no note on access for this one. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. Access is unmapped, which usually means a farm track and a walk. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Take the rules with you rather than trusting memory. Access can change hands, so last year's answer may not hold. If the gate is shut, Little Gillies Lake at 0.9 km is the nearest alternative. Treat Head Lake as unsettled until someone local tells you otherwise.
