Low, flat cloud sitting over the water, with a steady SSW wind and the barometer holding steady. Whatever swims in Gourlay Lake should be near the seam between weed and open water. Make the night the heart of the trip. Make the first hour count and build on it. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

This water sits in Timiskaming District, Ontario. It stands 331 metres above sea level. At about 25 hectares, a day is enough to walk the shoreline properly. There is roughly 2.5 km of shoreline here, which is a short walk end to end. Start from Kirkland Lake, 22 km down the road. The nearest city of size is Greater Sudbury, 219 km away. This one is safely inside the county line.
No depth figure has reached our records, which makes a plummet useful. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Across Timiskaming District, recorded fish include brook trout, northern pike and yellow perch. Species recorded across the county may be limited to a few waters. The shape of Gourlay Lake decides where the fish sit.
Long-run averages give July about 17°C and January about -17°C. Water stays cold even at the height of the year. Once it clears, about early May, the fishing comes on quickly. The open-water window runs from around early May to about mid November in an average year. Fishing peaks soon after break-up and again before the cold returns. That is the shape of the year on Gourlay Lake.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Esker Lakes Provincial Park covers this ground, which means extra rules to check. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Read any posted signs at the access point rather than assuming. Check whether bait restrictions apply before you buy any. Grover Lake sits 0.4 km off and takes the overflow. None of that is settled for Gourlay Lake in what we hold.
