No direct sun expected today, with hardly a ripple anywhere with the barometer flat. Start the search at Gaf Lake along the calm side of the wind. A slow day overall; the morning is the best of a quiet lot. Go lighter and slower than usual. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Set in Timiskaming District, Gaf Lake is an Ontario water. The water sits 335 metres up. Roughly 20 hectares: a morning covers one end, an afternoon the other. Shoreline comes to about 2.2 km, small enough to learn in a day. Head to Kirkland Lake, 23 km away, for anything you forgot. Then Englehart, 56 km, and Rouyn-Noranda, 64 km. No border sits close enough to matter.
Our records carry no depth, so judge it from the bank. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Species logged across Timiskaming District include brook trout, northern pike, yellow perch, Iowa darter and walleye. County records show what lives in the area; the local agency holds the water-by-water list. On Gaf Lake the first feature you find is usually worth a session.
In an average year July sits at 17°C and January at -17°C. The ice season is long here and the open one short. Expect a solid lid for months and a thaw around early May. On average, early May opens the water and mid November closes it again. The middle of summer slows a little, with dawn and dusk carrying it. Gaf Lake runs to its own calendar within the local pattern.
Public sources are silent on who controls the bank. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. This sits inside Esker Lakes Provincial Park, so read the reserve notices first. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Rules differ from one water to the next round here. Close seasons apply to some species and not others. Lavery Lake sits 0.4 km off and takes the overflow. Nothing on Gaf Lake should be assumed from this page alone.
