A clean, cloudless night over the water, with mild air moving in from the W with the barometer flat. Give structure within a cast of the bank the first hour at Flag Lake. Block out the hours from afternoon into evening. Slow down and let the fish find the bait. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

Out in Algoma, Ontario, sits Flag Lake. It sits at 404 metres above sea level. At about 49 hectares, a day is enough to walk the shoreline properly. At about 8.6 km of edge, most people work one arm at a time. 50 km away sits Elliot Lake, the nearest town. The nearest city of size is Greater Sudbury, 142 km away. There is no boundary nearby to worry about.
Depth went unrecorded, which puts the reading back on you. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Algoma records list walleye, northern pike, Iowa darter, yellow perch and white sucker among the fish reported. Take it as the county picture rather than a promise for this water. Fish Flag Lake where the bottom changes rather than where it looks deep.
Long-run averages give July about 17°C and January about -13°C. A full turn of seasons, with the strongest sport on either side of summer. Winter locks it down, and late April brings it back. Break-up near late April, freeze-up near late November: that is the shape of an average year. The middle of summer slows a little, with dawn and dusk carrying it. On Flag Lake the same rules apply, with local timing.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. We find no slipway, car park or made path within a short radius, so treat access as rough. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Parking space is the usual limit rather than the bank itself. A polite question at the farm gate opens more banks than anything else. Mill Lake, 3.6 km away, makes the obvious fallback. Treat access at Flag Lake as something to verify.
