A crisp, open sky after dark, with a whisper of wind from the SSE with the barometer flat. Activity on Cloud Lake should centre on the shaded margin through bright spells. The evening carries the best of the day. Work the productive water thoroughly. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

The Nipissing District end of Ontario holds Cloud Lake. It sits in rolling bush country. At roughly 2 hectares, the whole thing is within casting reach of a single walk. It is a small entry by Nipissing District standards. United Townships of Dysart, Dudley, Harcourt, Guilford, Harburn, Bruton, Havelock, Eyre and Clyde is the closest town at 39 km. Haliburton Village lies 56 km off, Huntsville another 68 km. It lies deep inside the county rather than near an edge.
No depth figure has reached our records, which makes a plummet useful. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Public occurrence data for Nipissing District names smallmouth bass, cisco, yellow perch and pumpkinseed. Records at county level tell you what is around, not what is stocked here. Work Cloud Lake in sections rather than trying to cover it.
Expect July to average close to 18°C, with January the cold end at about -13°C. A solid cap is the normal state through winter. Hard water holds through the cold months, breaking up near late April. The season between ice runs from about late April to late November. The strong weeks are the first after break-up and the last before the freeze. Plan around that when you fish Cloud Lake.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Nothing formal is recorded here: no ramp, no car park, no marked path. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Rules differ from one water to the next round here. Some ground is open by custom rather than by right, so tread carefully. Failing this one, try Fisher Lake, 0.5 km away. Signs at Cloud Lake carry more weight than any list.
