A still, cloudless night on the water, with the water lying quiet with a settled glass. Caviar Lake should fish best around the shaded margin through bright spells today. An ordinary day throughout, patience over timing. Change depth before you change anything else. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

Caviar Lake is one of the Kenora District waters in Ontario. The surface lies 325 metres up. At 33.24 sq km you are fishing a fraction of it whatever you do. Some 182 km of shoreline means conditions can differ from one end to the other. On our Kenora District list it sits near the top for size. Vermilion Bay lies 61 km from the water. Beyond it, Kenora at 68 km and Emo at 83 km. No county line comes close, which keeps the paperwork simple.
No depth figure has reached our records, which makes a plummet useful. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Open biodiversity records for Kenora District list northern pike, longnose sucker, white sucker and johnny darter. Records at this level tell you what is in the area. Treat Caviar Lake as a water to read rather than to cover.
Expect July near 19°C and January near -17°C on the long-run figures. A solid cap is the normal state through winter. The freeze runs deep into the year, with break-up near late April. Climate figures give an open season running late April to mid November. Early summer and early autumn carry the open-water season. The season on Caviar Lake rarely departs from it.
No access rule appears in what we hold. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. We find no slipway, car park or made path within a short radius, so treat access as rough. For the pike, wire up and throw larger lures along the weed edges. Check locally before you travel, because a wasted drive is a long one. Close seasons apply to some species and not others. Atom Lake, 2.6 km away, makes the obvious fallback. Rules at Caviar Lake are worth checking on the day.
