Look for Casper Lake in the Sudbury part of Ontario. It sits at 446 metres above sea level. At about 40 hectares, a day is enough to walk the shoreline properly. At about 6.3 km of edge, most people work one arm at a time. Compared with other Ontario water on our list, it sits high. Nearest place of any size is Elliot Lake, 88 km away. Then Chapleau, 90 km, and Blind River, 112 km. Rules here are straightforward: one set of provincial rules.
The records we hold are silent on depth, so plan to find it yourself. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. County-wide records name smallmouth bass, northern pike and yellow perch. The county figures include rivers and lakes alike. Casper Lake gives up more to patience than to distance.
Between January at about -15°C and July at about 17°C, the water has a wide range to work through. Expect a real winter and a strong spring after it. Look for the thaw near late April; the fishing lifts straight after. Ice clears near late April and comes back about mid November in a typical year. September and October fish steadily right up to the freeze. It sets the rhythm of the year at Casper Lake.
Nothing in our records says who may fish here. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Nothing is mapped in the way of a ramp or car park within a short radius. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Season dates differ by species, so read the table. Rules for boats are stricter than rules for the bank in many places. If the gate is shut, Upper Medicine Lake at 3.5 km is the nearest alternative. Signs at Casper Lake carry more weight than any list.
