Wet weather working through today, with a light NNE breeze and the barometer holding steady. The water to cover at Butterill Lake is any hard bottom among the soft. The best of it runs the day. Small adjustments will matter more than big moves. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

Butterill Lake is one of the Frontenac County waters in Ontario. The country round it is rolling bush from end to end. With some 17 hectares of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. Around 2.9 km of margin, front to back. By elevation it sits in the lower part of our Ontario listings. Sharbot Lake sits 20 km from here and is the nearest stop. Then Sharpton/Glenvale, 36 km, and Elginburg/Silvers Corners/Shannons Corners, 36 km. Two sets of local rules meet not far from this water.
Depth here is unknown, so count the lead down before committing. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. County-wide records name pumpkinseed, bluegill and rock bass. Read it as a county summary, not a water-by-water list. On Butterill Lake the first feature you find is usually worth a session.
Long-term averages put July at about 20°C and January near -10°C. The year splits cleanly: hard water, then open water. Look for the thaw near mid April; the fishing lifts straight after. On the long-run averages the water opens up around mid April and starts locking again about early December. Right after break-up, and again as the nights sharpen, is when to go. At Butterill Lake the season follows that pattern closely.
No access rule appears in what we hold. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. A slipway 1.2 km out gives trailer access. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Season dates differ by species, so read the table. Check whether bait restrictions apply before you buy any. Failing this one, try Fermoy Lake, 0.6 km away. Check the position at Butterill Lake before loading the car.
