A grey, even sky over the water, with a useful NW wind pushing food about and no real change in pressure. Activity on Boulder Lake should centre on sheltered bays and points. The forecast is against you; the night is the least bad option. One good spot fished well beats five fished quickly.

Boulder Lake lies in Rainy River District, in Ontario. It lies 394 metres above sea level. At about 53 hectares, a day is enough to walk the shoreline properly. Roughly 4.5 km of bank means you can walk to a fresh area when one goes quiet. Head to Atikokan, 35 km away, for anything you forgot. Then Ely, 65 km, and Babbitt, 87 km. It sits well inside the county, so one set of rules covers it.
Depth is not on record here, which means reading the ground instead. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Fish documented in Rainy River District include northern pike, smallmouth bass, yellow perch and walleye. It is the county picture; the agency list is water-specific. Work Boulder Lake in sections rather than trying to cover it.
Between January at about -16°C and July at about 18°C, the water has a wide range to work through. Spring and autumn carry the fishing; summer and winter test it. Once it clears, about late April, the fishing comes on quickly. Climate averages put the opening at about late April and the closing near mid November. The strongest runs come at either end of the open season. The season on Boulder Lake follows the weather closely.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. No made access is recorded, so a short walk in is the likely arrangement. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Where access is informal, keep it that way by behaving. Keep proof of licence with you rather than in the car. For a change of water, Red Pine Lake is 2.3 km distant. Confirm access to Boulder Lake locally before you travel.
