Scattered cloud dimming the moonlight, with steady pressure of wind from the WNW with the barometer flat. The productive water at Trail Lake will be around the margins and the shelf beyond them. A day for grinding out a result rather than chasing a peak. Fish tidy and take what the day gives.

Ontario holds Trail Lake, in Rainy River District. It stands 393 metres above sea level. The water covers some 87 hectares, so pick a bank rather than trying to cover it all. Around 9.2 km of bank, which is a long day on foot. Supplies mean a trip to Atikokan, 38 km off. Beyond it, Ely at 60 km and Babbitt at 82 km. The nearest edge is a long way off, so local rules apply throughout.
The records we hold are silent on depth, so plan to find it yourself. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. Species logged across Rainy River District include northern pike, smallmouth bass, yellow perch, walleye and white sucker. Take it as the county picture rather than a promise for this water. Anyone new to Trail Lake should walk it once before setting up.
The year swings from about -16°C in January to roughly 18°C in July. Winter shuts the surface down for months. Count the season from break-up, usually late April. Averages place the thaw at late April and the freeze at mid November. May into June fishes hardest, and September gives a second good stretch before the lid returns. Anyone fishing Trail Lake regularly works to that calendar.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. There is no mapped parking or launch nearby, which keeps numbers down. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Where a permit is needed, the nearest town usually sells it. Barbless rules turn up on managed water more often than not. Should this one be busy, Little Pine Lake is 2.1 km off. Rules at Trail Lake are worth checking on the day.
