An even grey lid over the water, with light air out of the W and the barometer holding steady. Give windblown banks where food collects the first hour at Bear Lake. A grinding day likely, with the morning worth the effort if any is. Quiet tactics only; the fish will not chase today.

Bear Lake is a Sudbury water, Ontario side. Country round the bank runs to rolling bush. Surface area is around 16 hectares, which gives you real water without needing a boat. Bank access stretches around 3.6 km in total. Chapleau is the closest place, 105 km off. Greater Sudbury sits 144 km out, and it is the nearest city worth the name. The county line is nowhere near, so one local authority covers the water.
Our records carry no depth, so judge it from the bank. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. County-wide records name smallmouth bass, northern pike, yellow perch, Iowa darter and walleye. The county figures include rivers and lakes alike. Read Bear Lake before you fish it and the day goes better.
The seasonal spread runs -16°C to 17°C. The year runs cold to warm and back, with clear transitions. The lid arrives early and lasts until roughly late April. The season between ice runs from about late April to mid November. June through September is the settled part of the year, with the shoulders busier for fish. On Bear Lake the same rules apply, with local timing.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Nothing built is recorded close to the bank here. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Provincial rules still apply whatever the bank status. Rules for boats are stricter than rules for the bank in many places. Yeo Lake, 1.2 km away, makes the obvious fallback. Check the position on Bear Lake before loading the car.
