No direct sun expected today, with a helpful ripple pushed from the W with the barometer flat. The productive water at Ash Lake will be around the calm side of the wind. A hard day on paper; the morning edges the rest. Go lighter and slower than usual. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Ash Lake is one of the Sudbury waters in Ontario. The bank is 406 metres above sea level. It measures about 17 hectares, which is a comfortable size for bank fishing. About 3.1 km of bank, so nothing stays unexplored for long. The town to know is Chapleau, 109 km out. The big place round here is Greater Sudbury, 141 km distant. The county line is nowhere near, so one local authority covers the water.
Nothing we hold settles how deep this runs. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Species logged across Sudbury include smallmouth bass, northern pike and yellow perch. Take it as the county picture rather than a promise for this water. Ash Lake gives up its fish to patience rather than distance.
July runs about 17°C on average, January about -16°C. Winter shuts the surface down for months. The lid arrives early and lasts until roughly late April. Open water usually runs from late April until about mid November. Late spring and early autumn carry the year between them. At Ash Lake the season follows that pattern closely.
We hold no note on access for this one. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. Nothing is mapped in the way of a ramp or car park within a short radius. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Where the road in crosses private land, ask first. Where parking is tight, arriving early solves most problems. Moore Lake, 1.6 km away, makes the obvious fallback. Nothing here settles the position at Ash Lake for certain.
