Flat light and a covered sky today, with mild air moving in from the W with the barometer flat. Most of the action on Atekepi Lake should come off the seam between weed and open water. If you must go, go in the morning. Treat it as a scouting trip with a rod in hand. Fish follow the bait in autumn, so find one to find the other.

Atekepi Lake is a Sudbury water, Ontario side. The surface lies 392 metres up. Roughly 53 hectares: a morning covers one end, an afternoon the other. At about 11 km of edge, most people work one arm at a time. Nearest place of any size is Timmins, 80 km away. Further out sit Chapleau (104 km) and Iroquois Falls (137 km). No county line comes close, which keeps the paperwork simple.
We hold no survey for this water; read the slope of the shoreline instead. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Sudbury records list smallmouth bass, northern pike and yellow perch among the fish reported. County records show what lives in the area; the local agency holds the water-by-water list. Atekepi Lake gives up more to patience than to distance.
Temperature averages peak at 17°C in July and bottom out at -17°C in January. Everything is compressed into the middle of the year. Hard cover is dependable here; it goes around early May. In an average year the thaw lands around early May and the freeze near mid November. September and October fish steadily right up to the freeze. The season on Atekepi Lake rarely departs from it.
Nothing in our records says who may fish here. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. No made access appears within a short radius, so plan to park on a verge and walk. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Bank access can be seasonal on ground like this. Close seasons apply to some species and not others. For a change of water, Katagi Lake is 3.3 km distant. Nothing here settles the position at Atekepi Lake for certain.
