A still, cloudless night on the water, with a kind SSW breeze on the water and no real change in pressure. Activity on Katagi Lake should centre on the shaded margin through bright spells. A broad window opens from the day. Take the steady approach over the searching one. Shortening days concentrate the feeding into fewer hours.

Katagi Lake is one of the Sudbury listings for Ontario. Beyond the shoreline you have spruce and muskeg. At some 2.50 sq km it is far too large to cover on foot in a day. The shoreline runs to about 27 km, far more than one trip can cover. It ranks high for size among our Sudbury listings. The nearest place of any size is Timmins, 78 km away. Then Chapleau, 107 km, and Iroquois Falls, 135 km. One jurisdiction covers this water end to end.
We hold no depth figure for this one. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. County-wide records name smallmouth bass, northern pike and yellow perch. The county list is broader than any single water. Anyone new to Katagi Lake should walk it once before setting up.
Average temperature peaks around 17°C in July and bottoms out near -17°C in January. This is a two-season water: locked, then wide open. Count the season from break-up, usually early May. Expect the water usable from around early May until roughly mid November. September and October fish steadily right up to the freeze. On Katagi Lake the same rules apply, with local timing.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. We find no slipway, car park or made path within a short radius, so treat access as rough. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Sort the permit out before you load the car. Keep proof of licence with you rather than in the car. Kasasway Lake, 3 km away, makes the obvious fallback. Where Katagi Lake is concerned, a local answer beats a written one.
