Johnson Lake near Roblin: Fishing Spots, Seasons and Access

• Overview

  Johnson Lake is one of the Riding Mountain West waters in Manitoba. The ground around here is lake country bush. This is a pocket water of some 8 hectares, and every part of it is reachable from the bank. Roblin is the closest town at 14 km. Kamsack follows at 60 km, then Langenburg at 61 km. No county line comes close, which keeps the paperwork simple.

• Where to Fish on Johnson Lake

  Depth is not on record here, so the bank has to tell you. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Species logged across Riding Mountain West include white sucker, rock bass, blackside darter and johnny darter. County data is a starting point rather than a guarantee. The near bank of Johnson Lake is often the one people ignore.

• Seasonal Patterns

  July runs about 18°C on average, January about -20°C. Fishing here follows the temperature more than the calendar. Ice is part of the season here, ending near late April. Open water usually runs from late April until about mid November. May into June fishes hardest, and September gives a second good stretch before the lid returns. On Johnson Lake the same rules apply, with local timing.

• Tackle & Baits

  No access rule appears in what we hold. We find no slipway, car park or made path within a short radius, so treat access as rough. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Some banks are open only from a marked point.
