Stars out and no cloud tonight, with a light SW breeze and pressure sitting still. The productive water at Code Lake will be around structure within a cast of the bank. Little to get excited about, though the night holds a sliver of promise. Lower the pace and stay patient. Shortening days concentrate the feeding into fewer hours.

Code Lake is one of the Riding Mountain West waters in Manitoba. This is pine and birch country. About 6 hectares of surface, which puts the far bank inside easy sight. It is a small entry by Riding Mountain West standards. Roblin is the closest town at 16 km. For a city, Regina is 260 km off. No county line comes close, which keeps the paperwork simple.
Depth is not on record here, so the bank has to tell you. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Fish documented in Riding Mountain West include white sucker, rock bass, blackside darter and johnny darter. It is the county picture; the agency list is water-specific. On Code Lake the first feature you find is usually worth a session.
Temperature averages peak at 18°C in July and bottom out at -20°C in January. The middle months are generous; the ends are demanding. Ice is part of the season here, ending near late April. Expect the water usable from around late April until roughly mid November. The strongest runs come at either end of the open season. Keep it in mind when planning a trip to Code Lake.
Our records carry no access rule either way. It is recorded as intermittent, which means the basin empties in dry spells. Nothing is mapped in the way of a ramp or car park within a short radius. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Rules differ from one water to the next round here. Keep proof of licence with you rather than in the car. For a change of water, Cowan Lake is 0.3 km distant. Confirm access to Code Lake locally before you travel.
