A crisp, open sky after dark, with light air out of the SSW and the barometer holding steady. Whatever swims in Smart Lake should be near sheltered bays and points. Save your energy for the middle of the day. Start on the obvious water and expand from there. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

Smart Lake is one of the Riding Mountain West waters in Manitoba. The water sits 605 metres up. Small at around 8 hectares: two anglers spread out cover most of it. Nearest place of any size is Roblin, 18 km away. After that come Kamsack at 60 km and Langenburg at 66 km. The county line is nowhere near, so one local authority covers the water.
Depth figures are not published for this one. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Survey and observation records for Riding Mountain West include white sucker, rock bass, blackside darter, johnny darter and shorthead redhorse. The county figures include rivers and lakes alike. On Smart Lake a short move beats a long cast.
Climate normals give 18°C for July and -19°C for January. A full turn of seasons, with the strongest sport on either side of summer. Count on hard cover from midwinter, and open water from late April. Averages suggest open water from about late April through to roughly mid November. Fishing peaks soon after break-up and again before the cold returns. Smart Lake fishes to that pattern most years.
The access position is unclear from public sources. Mapped as intermittent, it fills after rain and shrinks between. Mapping records no facilities at all near this water. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Read any posted signs at the access point rather than assuming. Some stretches are reserved and marked as such on the ground. Dark Lake, 1.1 km away, makes the obvious fallback. What applies at Smart Lake may have changed since it was mapped.
