A closed sky with even light today, with a gentle ripple from the ENE with the glass holding level. Start the search at Stag Lake along shallow cover and weed edges. Quiet conditions all day, with the morning marginally better. Quiet tactics only; the fish will not chase today. A raw day: short sessions and precise casts pay.

Stag Lake lies in Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako, British Columbia. Rolling bush runs right down to the water. Surface area is around 31 hectares, which gives you real water without needing a boat. Bank access stretches around 3.1 km in total. The town to know is Vanderhoof, 42 km out. Kamloops sits 476 km out, and it is the nearest city worth the name. It lies deep inside the county rather than near an edge.
The records we hold are silent on depth, so plan to find it yourself. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Species logged across Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako include sockeye salmon, Coho salmon and Chinook salmon. Some of the species recorded here are protected or tightly regulated, so check what may be targeted before you fish. The near bank of Stag Lake is often the one people ignore.
Climate normals give 14°C for July and -11°C for January. Spring and autumn carry the fishing; summer and winter test it. The freeze runs deep into the year, with break-up near mid April. In an average year the thaw lands around mid April and the freeze near mid November. Late spring and early autumn carry the year between them. Stag Lake runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. No slipway, car park or made path shows up nearby in mapping, so treat access as rough. For the trout, small spinners and a box of nymphs cover both approaches. Where a permit is needed, the nearest town usually sells it. Where parking is tight, arriving early solves most problems. Theda Lake, 1.9 km away, makes the obvious fallback. Treat Stag Lake as unsettled until someone local tells you otherwise.
