Cloud from horizon to horizon today, with a light SSE breeze with the glass holding level. The productive water at Sapeye Lake will be around the calm side of the wind. Little to get excited about, though the night holds a sliver of promise. Lower the pace and stay patient. A hard-frost feel to the day; keep expectations modest.

Set in Cariboo Regional District, British Columbia, this is Sapeye Lake. Height above sea level is 881 metres. The water covers around 2.91 sq km, which puts most of it out of reach from the bank. Some 11 km of bank gives room to move when the wind turns. Size puts it in the front rank of our Cariboo Regional District list. Nearest place of any size is Anahim Lake, 85 km away. Hanceville is 117 km and Bella Coola 153 km. The nearest boundary is a fair way off.
The records we hold are silent on depth, so plan to find it yourself. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. County-wide records name sockeye salmon, Chinook salmon, bull trout and Coho salmon. Some of the species recorded here are protected or tightly regulated, so check what may be targeted before you fish. The near bank of Sapeye Lake is often the one people ignore.
August runs about 13°C on average, December about -8°C. Winter shuts things down for a spell, then spring reopens them fast. After mid April the shallows warm and the fish move up. Break-up near mid April, freeze-up near mid November: that is the shape of an average year. Right after break-up, and again as the nights sharpen, is when to go. It holds true on Sapeye Lake more years than not.
Nothing on record says whether the bank is open or closed. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. Nothing is mapped in the way of a ramp or car park within a short radius. Trout here take small spinners, spoons and, where fly water allows, a nymph or dry. A phone call first saves an afternoon. A polite question at the farm gate opens more banks than anything else. Horn Lake, 3.2 km away, makes the obvious fallback. Signs at Sapeye Lake carry more weight than any list.
