A closed sky with even light today, with a steady NE wind with the glass holding level. Start the search at Helm Lake along the weed line and any gaps in it. Block out the hours from the day. Cover water early, then settle where the signs are. A properly cold day, so expect slow, deliberate fishing.

Helm Lake is a Squamish-Lillooet Regional District water, British Columbia side. Elevation runs to 1,737 metres. Surface area runs to about 6 hectares — small enough to read in one session. It is high ground by British Columbia standards. Start from Whistler, 18 km down the road. Further out sit Squamish (31 km) and Pemberton (42 km). It sits well inside its county, with no border complications.
We hold no depth figure for this one. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Species logged across Squamish-Lillooet Regional District include Coho salmon, sockeye salmon and rainbow trout. Some of the species recorded here are protected or tightly regulated, so check what may be targeted before you fish. The shape of Helm Lake decides where the fish sit.
Expect August to average close to 11°C, with December the cold end at about -6°C. Spring and autumn carry the fishing; summer and winter test it. The lid usually sets by midwinter and gives way around early May. Break-up near early May, freeze-up near mid November: that is the shape of an average year. The strong weeks are the first after break-up and the last before the freeze. It sets the rhythm of the year at Helm Lake.
No access rule appears in what we hold. No slipway, car park or made path shows up nearby in mapping, so treat access as rough. Light line and small metal for the trout; a fly rod earns its place on calm evenings. Where a permit is needed, the nearest town usually sells it. Rules for boats are stricter than rules for the bank in many places. The nearest alternative is Black Tusk Lake, 0.7 km out. Check the position at Helm Lake before loading the car.
