A crisp, open sky after dark, with a soft ENE wind with a settled glass. Give the margins and the shelf beyond them the first hour at Gwendoline Lake. A broad window opens from the day. Commit to the pattern once the first fish shows. Shortening days concentrate the feeding into fewer hours.

Gwendoline Lake is one of the Metro Vancouver Regional District waters in British Columbia. Height above sea level is 527 metres. With some 11 hectares of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. The full circuit measures close to 1.5 km on foot. Supplies mean a trip to Yennadon, 11 km off. Maple Ridge lies 12 km off, Haney another 13 km. No county line comes close, which keeps the paperwork simple.
Our records carry no depth, so judge it from the bank. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Public occurrence data for Metro Vancouver Regional District names white sturgeon, Coho salmon, sockeye salmon and rainbow trout. Protected fish appear in the records for this area, so treat the list as information, not an invitation. The shape of Gwendoline Lake rewards a slow walk along one bank.
Averages move between 1°C in January and 16°C in August. Conditions shift steadily rather than sharply. Hard water here is never dependable, so check for yourself before stepping out. The hot months push the fishing to dawn and dusk. It holds true on Gwendoline Lake more years than not.
The access position is unclear from public sources. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. UBC Malcolm Knapp Research Forest takes in this water; protected-area rules will apply. Trout here take small spinners, spoons and, where fly water allows, a nymph or dry. Sort the permit out before you load the car. Night access is frequently treated as a separate matter. Placid Lake at 0.6 km is the sensible second choice. For Gwendoline Lake, the notice at the access point is the final word.
