A blustery day over the water, with stillness over the whole water and pressure sitting still. Star Lake should fish best around reed fringes and open pockets today. A slow day overall; the evening is the best of a quiet lot. Lower the pace and stay patient. The autumn feed-up is on; baitfish areas are the key.

Look for Star Lake in the Parkland County part of Alberta. Height above sea level is 735 metres. It runs to roughly 27 hectares — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. The bank runs about 2.2 km all the way round, so one visit can cover most of it. Stony Plain lies 18 km from the water. Spruce Grove lies 24 km off, Secord another 38 km. Rules here are straightforward: one set of provincial rules.
No published figure covers depth, so learn it as you fish. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Across Parkland County, recorded fish include northern pike, yellow perch and Iowa darter. Those are county-wide records, so not every one of them will be in this water. Work Star Lake in sections rather than trying to cover it.
July runs about 16°C on average, January about -13°C. Winter puts a hard lid on this one. Look for the thaw near late April; the fishing lifts straight after. The lid tends to go about late April and return around mid November. The shoulder weeks of the open season are the productive ones. The season on Star Lake rarely departs from it.
We hold no note on access for this one. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Nothing in the way of made access shows up nearby: no ramp, no car park, no path. Trout here take small spinners, spoons and, where fly water allows, a nymph or dry. Where the road in crosses private land, ask first. Check whether bait restrictions apply before you buy any. For a change of water, Johnnys Lake is 2.6 km distant. Where Star Lake is concerned, a local answer beats a written one.
