No direct sun expected today, with mild air moving in from the SSW with the glass holding level. Start the search at Nelson Lake along bays that hold the day's warmth. Block out the hours from the day. Cover water early, then settle where the signs are. Cooler water spreads fish back across the shallows.

Nelson Lake is one of the Municipal District of Lesser Slave River No. 124 waters in Alberta. Beyond the shoreline you have spruce and muskeg. At about 90 hectares, a day is enough to walk the shoreline properly. Roughly 4.2 km of bank means you can walk to a fresh area when one goes quiet. Barrhead is the closest place, 44 km off. Then Westlock, 48 km, and Athabasca, 66 km. A border sits close enough to be relevant to the paperwork.
We hold no depth figure for this one. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. Across Municipal District of Lesser Slave River No. 124, recorded fish include northern pike, cisco, Arctic grayling, walleye and white sucker. Read it as a county summary, not a water-by-water list. The shape of Nelson Lake rewards a slow walk along one bank.
The year swings from about -16°C in January to roughly 16°C in July. The fishing year opens late and shuts early. The open season starts with the thaw, near enough late April. The open-water window runs from around late April to about mid November in an average year. The shoulder weeks of the open season are the productive ones. Nelson Lake runs to its own calendar within the local pattern.
There is no clear statement anywhere on who can fish it. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. Nothing is mapped in the way of a ramp or car park within a short radius. Trout here take small spinners, spoons and, where fly water allows, a nymph or dry. Look for a notice board at the entrance. Where parking is tight, arriving early solves most problems. Failing this one, try Crane Lake, 3 km away. Nothing here settles the position at Nelson Lake for certain.
