Partly cloudy skies today, with a kind WNW breeze on the water and the barometer holding steady. Mud Lake should fish best around reed fringes and open pockets today. The night should out-fish the rest of the day. Push the good hours hard and rest through the dead ones. Cooler water spreads fish back across the shallows.

Wyoming holds Mud Lake, in Fremont County. This is dry rangeland ground. About 17 acres of surface, which puts the far bank inside easy sight. Start from Pinedale, 45 miles down the road. Beyond it, Fort Washakie at 47 miles and Ethete at 50 miles. Also worth knowing: Lake Julia (0.2 miles), Torrey Lake 0.8 miles away, Ring Lake (1.6 miles), Trail Lake 2.6 miles away and Lake Louise (5 miles). The county line is nowhere near, so one local authority covers the water.
Depth went unrecorded, which puts the reading back on you. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Across Fremont County, recorded fish include brown trout, rainbow trout, white sucker, brook trout and common carp. What holds for the county may not hold for this water. At Mud Lake the water rewards a slow, careful approach.
The seasonal spread runs 22°F to 58°F. Winter shuts things down for a spell, then spring reopens them fast. Once it clears, about late April, the fishing comes on quickly. The lid tends to go about late April and return around mid November. The strongest runs come at either end of the open season. Expect Mud Lake to follow that timing.
Nothing in our records says who may fish here. Nothing in the way of made access shows up nearby: no ramp, no car park, no path. For the trout, small spinners and a box of nymphs cover both approaches. Read any posted signs at the access point rather than assuming. Access can change hands, so last year's answer may not hold. Lake Julia sits 0.2 miles off and takes the overflow. For Mud Lake, the notice at the access point is the final word.
