Hard light and clear air over the water, with next to no ripple with a softening glass. The fish at Lake Newman are likely to sit near any hard bottom among the soft. The productive run goes night into morning. Start on the obvious water and expand from there. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

In Wisconsin, Lake Newman belongs to Douglas County. Everything around it is pine and birch. About 10 acres of surface, which puts the far bank inside easy sight. On size it sits at the modest end of our Douglas County list. 15 miles away sits Lake Nebagamon, the nearest town. Then Superior, 17 miles, and Proctor, 21 miles. There is no boundary nearby to worry about.
No depth figure has reached our records, which makes a plummet useful. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. County-wide records name yellow perch, walleye and white sucker. The county figures include rivers and lakes alike. At Lake Newman the first feature you find is worth twenty minutes.
Expect July near 67°F and January near 8°F on the long-run figures. Cold locks it up for a good stretch each year. Look for the thaw near mid April; the fishing lifts straight after. On average, mid April opens the water and late November closes it again. Early summer and early autumn carry the open-water season. Expect Lake Newman to follow that timing.
We have no record of the rules that apply on this bank. Formal access is not mapped, so the last stretch is likely on foot. Walleye come to jigs worked slow near bottom, and to trolled crankbaits along the drops at dusk. Read any posted signs at the access point rather than assuming. Some water is controlled locally without a sign saying so. One Buck Lake at 0.2 miles is the sensible second choice. For Lake Newman, the notice at the access point is the final word.
