Solid cloud cover today, with mild air moving in from the ENE and a rising glass. Fish at Winchester Wasteway should hold close to windblown banks where food collects. A broad window opens from the day. Commit to the pattern once the first fish shows. Cooler water spreads fish back across the shallows.

The Grant County end of Washington holds Winchester Wasteway. This is open dry country ground. Quincy lies 13 miles from the water. Ephrata lies 14 miles off, Cascade Valley another 14 miles. Round about: Sand Lake the better part of 9 miles, Martha Lake 10 miles off, George Lake the better part of 10 miles, Flat Lake 12 miles off and Moses Lake the better part of 13 miles. The nearest edge is a long way off, so local rules apply throughout.
The records we hold are silent on depth, so plan to find it yourself. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. County-wide records name yellow perch, largemouth bass, bluegill, black crappie and smallmouth bass. County records show what lives in the area; the local agency holds the water-by-water list. On Winchester Wasteway a short move beats a long cast.
August is the warm end of the year here, averaging about 70°F, while January sits near 29°F. Temperature moves within a narrow band, and so does the fishing. Cover comes and goes, so treat it with suspicion rather than trust. March through May is the strongest run, with October and November a second stretch. The season on Winchester Wasteway rarely departs from it.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. Park at Winchester Reservoir Wildlife Area, half a mile from the water. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. A landowner's word beats anything printed elsewhere. Barbless rules turn up on managed water more often than not. Sand Lake at 9 miles is the sensible second choice. For Winchester Wasteway, the notice at the access point is the final word.
