Overcast skies today, with steady pressure of wind from the SE with a softening glass. The water to cover at Klawatti Lake is windblown banks where food collects. Expect the better fishing from night into morning. Give the likely spots time before moving. Shortening days concentrate the feeding into fewer hours.

You will find Klawatti Lake in Whatcom County, Washington. Around the bank it is mixed forest. It runs to roughly 76 acres — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. The edge runs 1.3 miles or so, easy to work in an afternoon. It ranks high for size among our Whatcom County listings. The closest town, Darrington, is 32 miles away. Further out sit Arlington Heights (51 miles) and Granite Falls (52 miles). No border sits close enough to matter.
Without a survey to go on, judge depth from how the bank falls away. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Open biodiversity records for Whatcom County list sockeye salmon, Coho salmon and white sturgeon. Protected fish appear in the records for this area, so treat the list as information, not an invitation. On Klawatti Lake a short move beats a long cast.
Temperature averages peak at 54°F in August and bottom out at 20°F in December. The season turns properly here, and fish follow it closely. The freeze runs deep into the year, with break-up near early May. From about early May to around mid November, expect open water on the long-run figures. Right after break-up, and again as the nights sharpen, is when to go. Expect Klawatti Lake to follow that timing.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. The map shows no ramp or car park nearby, so this is a walk-in water. Trout here take small spinners, spoons and, where fly water allows, a nymph or dry. Rules differ from one water to the next round here. Fishing rules and camping rules are set separately here. Moraine Lake at 2.1 miles is the sensible second choice. Rules at Klawatti Lake are worth checking on the day.
