A closed sky with even light today, with a helpful ripple pushed from the WSW with a firming glass. Most of the action on Moraine Lake should come off the first drop-off and weed lines. The productive run goes the day. Start on the obvious water and expand from there. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

The Whatcom County end of Washington holds Moraine Lake. Lake country bush runs right down to the water. It measures about 82 acres, which is a comfortable size for bank fishing. It is among the larger waters listed here for Whatcom County. Darrington is the closest place, 30 miles off. Arlington Heights is 50 miles and Granite Falls 51 miles. No boundary runs near, so the county rules hold throughout.
Depth went unrecorded, which puts the reading back on you. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. Survey and observation records for Whatcom County include sockeye salmon, Coho salmon, white sturgeon, Chum salmon and pink salmon. Some of the species recorded here are protected or tightly regulated, so check what may be targeted before you fish. On Moraine Lake the obvious spot is not always the productive one.
The seasonal spread runs 19°F to 51°F. Hard water is a season in its own right here. Look for the thaw near mid May; the fishing lifts straight after. Average temperatures cross freezing around mid May in spring and again near mid November in autumn. Spring is short and heavy here; autumn is longer and steadier. Moraine Lake runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
The rules here are undocumented as far as public sources go. No slipway, car park or made path shows up nearby in mapping, so treat access as rough. Light line and small metal for the trout; a fly rod earns its place on calm evenings. Bank access can be seasonal on ground like this. Some stretches are reserved and marked as such on the ground. If the gate is shut, Klawatti Lake at 2.1 miles is the nearest alternative. What applies at Moraine Lake may have changed since it was mapped.
