A wet system passing over today, with light air out of the S with a softening glass. Expect most activity at Old Lake around windblown banks where food collects. Plan around the stretch from the day. Keep moving until you find them. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

Old Lake is one of the Ellis County waters in Texas. It lies 525 feet above sea level. For supplies, Ennis is 1.4 miles out. Palmer follows at 6.4 miles, then Nash at 11 miles. In the same area: Lake Clark at 1.1 miles, Bardwell Lake 4.2 miles off, Griffith Reservoir at 4.3 miles, Soil Conservation Service Site 29 Reservoir 6.4 miles off and Soil Conservation Service Site 5 Reservoir at 6.8 miles. It sits well inside the county, so one set of rules covers it.
Depth is not on record here, so the bank has to tell you. Points where the flooded channel swings in are the reliable ones. A reservoir gives you a hard edge, a shelf, and not much else. Nearby survey and observation records mention blue catfish, largemouth bass and white bass. Reporting is uneven, so absence from the list means little. Treat Old Lake as a water to read rather than to cover.
Averages move between 45°F in January and 84°F in July. Temperatures stay workable through the cold season. Late winter and spring fish steadiest here. Late winter often fishes better here than midsummer does. Old Lake runs to that rhythm year in and year out. Overcast days spread the fishing across more hours.
Access status is simply unknown for this water. Kachina Prairie Park runs up to the bank here, which usually means extra restrictions. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Take the rules with you rather than trusting memory. A polite question at the farm gate opens more banks than anything else. Lake Clark at 1.1 miles is the sensible second choice. For Old Lake in particular, ask before you travel.
