Full sun on the water today, with an easy breeze from the WNW and pressure sitting still. Whatever swims in Rock Lake should be near reed fringes and open pockets. The useful hours run night into morning. Trust the forecast and stay out through the window. Fish follow the bait in autumn, so find one to find the other.

The Deschutes County end of Oregon holds Rock Lake. The ground round it is open valley. At roughly 8 acres, the whole thing is within casting reach of a single walk. Nearest place of any size is Three Rivers, 26 miles away. The big place round here is Eugene, 57 miles distant. Nearest other option: Junction Lake just 0.7 miles, Slipper Lake 0.7 miles off, Martin Lake just 1.2 miles, Plumb Lake 1.2 miles off and Mud Lake just 1.5 miles. Rules here are straightforward: one county, one set of rules.
No depth figure has reached our records, which makes a plummet useful. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. County-wide records name rainbow trout, brook trout, mountain whitefish, brown trout and largemouth bass. At least one recorded species is protected in parts of its range; read the local rules before targeting anything. Treat Rock Lake as a water to read rather than to cover.
Between December at about 30°F and August at about 58°F, the water has a wide range to work through. The swings are modest, so patterns change slowly. It should never be assumed safe, whatever the month says. April and May are the settled weeks, with October close behind. Anyone fishing Rock Lake regularly works to that calendar.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. No made access is recorded, so a short walk in is the likely arrangement. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Take the rules with you rather than trusting memory. Where tickets apply, they are sold in the nearest town rather than on the bank. Junction Lake sits 0.7 miles off and takes the overflow. Nothing on Rock Lake should be assumed from this page alone.
