Bright, clear skies over the water today, with a whisper of wind from the W and a falling glass. Expect most activity at Boot Lake around the shallows early and the drop later. The day holds up well from night into morning. Work the productive water thoroughly. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

Boot Lake lies in Deschutes County, Oregon. It sits at 5,289 feet above sea level. This is a pocket water of some 5 acres, and every part of it is reachable from the bank. The closest town, Three Rivers, is 22 miles away. The nearest city of size is Eugene, 60 miles away. No county line comes close, which keeps the paperwork simple.
Depth went unrecorded, which puts the reading back on you. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Records held for Deschutes County cover rainbow trout, brook trout, mountain whitefish, brown trout and largemouth bass. Several of these carry legal protection or closed seasons; the rulebook comes before the rod. Anyone new to Boot Lake should walk it once before setting up.
Climate normals give 56°F for August and 27°F for December. Neither winter nor summer shuts things down for long. Cover comes and goes, so treat it with suspicion rather than trust. The hot months push the fishing to dawn and dusk. That shapes the year on Boot Lake. After a storm, the water clears from the edges inwards.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. There is a campsite half a mile from the water. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Rules differ from one water to the next round here. Night access is frequently treated as a separate matter. For a change of water, Cliff Lake is 0.4 miles distant. Confirm access to Boot Lake locally before you travel.
