Cloud from horizon to horizon today, with a kind NNE breeze on the water and pressure easing off. Activity on Mud Pond should centre on any feature that breaks the open water. Block out the hours from the day. Slow down and let the fish find the bait. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Mud Pond lies in Franklin County, in New York. This is mixed forest ground. It measures about 38 acres, which is a comfortable size for bank fishing. The full circuit measures close to 1.7 miles on foot. The closest town, Saranac Lake, is 14 miles away. For a city, Ville-Marie is 71 miles off. It sits well inside its county, with no border complications.
Nothing we hold settles how deep this runs. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Fish documented in Franklin County include brook trout, white sucker, brown trout, yellow perch and smallmouth bass. Those are county-wide records, so not every one of them will be in this water. On Mud Pond the obvious spot is not always the productive one.
Averages here run 64°F at the top of summer and 13°F at the bottom of winter. A solid cap is the normal state through winter. Hard water holds through the cold months, breaking up near late April. Climate figures give an open season running late April to late November. Right after break-up, and again as the nights sharpen, is when to go. Plan around that when you fish Mud Pond.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. No made access appears within a short radius, so plan to park on a verge and walk. State or provincial rules still apply whatever the bank status. Barbless rules turn up on managed water more often than not. Should this one be busy, Club Pond is 0.9 miles off. Nothing on Mud Pond should be assumed from this page alone.
