Steady rain over the water today, with a helpful ripple pushed from the WNW with the glass slipping lower. On Ayers Lake, work the margins and the shelf beyond them first. The best of it runs afternoon into evening. Push the good hours hard and rest through the dead ones. Cooler water spreads fish back across the shallows.

New York holds Ayers Lake, in Fulton County. It lies 1,693 feet above sea level. The water covers some 89 acres, so pick a bank rather than trying to cover it all. The bank runs about 1.3 miles all the way round, so one visit can cover most of it. Some 11 miles away sits Dolgeville, the nearest settlement. After that come Saint Johnsville at 15 miles and Little Falls at 17 miles. Two sets of local rules meet not far from this water.
Depth went unrecorded, which puts the reading back on you. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Open biodiversity records for Fulton County list brown trout, brook trout, white sucker, brown bullhead and tessellated darter. It is the county picture; the agency list is water-specific. Ayers Lake gives up its fish to patience rather than distance.
Typical July readings run about 66°F; by January the average is down near 16°F. The year runs cold to warm and back, with clear transitions. The lid arrives early and lasts until roughly mid April. Averages place the thaw at mid April and the freeze at early December. Reckon on open water from spring through to late autumn, with May and June the strongest. On Ayers Lake that shapes the whole year.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. There is no mapped parking or launch close by, which usually means walking in. Trout here take small spinners, spoons and, where fly water allows, a nymph or dry. Rules differ from one water to the next round here. Rules for boats are stricter than rules for the bank in many places. Should this one be busy, Pleasant Lake is 1.1 miles off. Treat access at Ayers Lake as something to verify.
