Rain moving through today, with a stiffish breeze from the SE and pressure easing off. The water to cover at Stark Lake is the weed line and any gaps in it. A stay-home graph, with the night as the one excuse to go. Save the long walk for a better forecast. Shortening days concentrate the feeding into fewer hours.

Stark Lake sits within Aitkin County in Minnesota. This is lake country bush ground. The water covers some 208 acres, so pick a bank rather than trying to cover it all. The edge covers about 3.3 miles, enough to hold several distinct areas. On our Aitkin County list it sits near the top for size. Aitkin lies 9.1 miles from the water. Beyond it, Crosby at 13 miles and Crosslake at 14 miles. This one sits near enough to a boundary to be worth checking.
Nothing we hold settles how deep this runs. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. Records held for Aitkin County cover northern pike, bluegill, yellow perch, black crappie and largemouth bass. The county figures include rivers and lakes alike. Stark Lake gives up more to patience than to distance.
Expect July near 68°F and January near 6°F on the long-run figures. Winter shuts things down for a spell, then spring reopens them fast. Firm cover through the cold months, then open water from mid April. Ice clears near mid April and comes back about late November in a typical year. Right after break-up, and again as the nights sharpen, is when to go. Keep it in mind when planning a trip to Stark Lake.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. Nothing in the way of made access shows up nearby: no ramp, no car park, no path. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Where access is informal, keep it that way by behaving. Access can change hands, so last year's answer may not hold. Twin Lakes, 1.1 miles away, makes the obvious fallback. Nothing here settles the position at Stark Lake for certain.
