Stars out and no cloud tonight, with a kind WNW breeze on the water with the glass on the way up. Fish at Spaulding Lake should hold close to the weed line and any gaps in it. The strongest window runs from afternoon into evening. Keep expectations modest and fish carefully. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Look for Spaulding Lake in Thunder Bay District, Ontario. The bank is 534 metres above sea level. With some 17 hectares of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. About 2.7 km of bank, so nothing stays unexplored for long. Compared with other Ontario water on our list, it sits high. Some 35 km away sits Grand Marais, the nearest settlement. Neebing is 61 km and Parkdale 77 km. No county line comes close, which keeps the paperwork simple.
Open data we checked carries no depth for this water. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Species logged across Thunder Bay District include cisco, blackfin cisco and rainbow smelt. Those are county-wide records, so not every one of them will be in this water. The shape of Spaulding Lake rewards a slow walk along one bank.
Averages here run 17°C at the top of summer and -15°C at the bottom of winter. A full turn of seasons, with the strongest sport on either side of summer. After early May the shallows warm and the fish move up. On average, early May opens the water and mid November closes it again. Late spring and early autumn carry the year between them. Expect Spaulding Lake to follow that timing.
Nothing we hold confirms whether access is permitted. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. Mapping shows a campsite some 300 m from the water. A light spinning outfit with a small box of lures and some bait covers most of what swims here. Season dates differ by species, so read the table. Fishing rules and camping rules are set separately here. Should this one be busy, Crystal Lake is 1.1 km off. Where Spaulding Lake is concerned, a local answer beats a written one.
