Minnesota holds Sakatah Lake, in Le Sueur County. The bank is 991 feet above sea level. At 1,240 acres this is proper open water rather than a pond. Some 11 miles of bank gives room to move when the wind turns. On our Le Sueur County list it sits near the top for size. Waterville is the closest town at 2.1 miles. Further out sit Waseca (11 miles) and Janesville (12 miles). Being near a boundary, it pays to know which side you are fishing.
The basin has been measured to about 11 feet. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Across Le Sueur County, recorded fish include common carp, bluegill, largemouth bass, walleye and yellow perch. What holds for the county may not hold for this water. The near bank of Sakatah Lake is often the one people ignore.
In an average year July sits at 71°F and January at 11°F. Winter closes the water for a while, and the reopening is worth catching. Ice is part of the season here, ending near early April. Going by climate averages, expect open water from about early April until roughly early December. June through September is the settled part of the year, with the shoulders busier for fish. On Sakatah Lake that shapes the whole year.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. There is a launch about half a mile from the bank. There is a car park half a mile from the bank. Mapping shows a campsite some half a mile from the water. Toilets show in mapping about half a mile away. Bank access can be seasonal on ground like this. Should this one be busy, Horseshoe Lake is 2.4 miles off. Ask locally about Sakatah Lake if anything is unclear.
