A clean, cloudless night over the water, with next to no ripple and the barometer heading up. Start the search at Rifle Lake along the calm side of the wind. Save your energy for the middle of the day. Stay patient; middling days often turn late. The autumn feed-up is on; baitfish areas are the key.

Set in Lake County, Rifle Lake is a Minnesota water. The ground around here is pine and birch. It measures about 39 acres, which is a comfortable size for bank fishing. The bank runs about 1.4 miles all the way round, so one visit can cover most of it. Start from Ely, 20 miles down the road. Babbitt lies 27 miles off, Hoyt Lakes another 42 miles. The county line is nowhere near, so one local authority covers the water.
Depth is unmeasured here, so let the shoreline guide you. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. Lake County records list white sucker, yellow perch and northern pike among the fish reported. Records at county level tell you what is around, not what is stocked here. Rifle Lake fishes better once you know its edges.
Average temperature peaks around 65°F in July and bottoms out near 4°F in January. Winter closes the water for a while, and the reopening is worth catching. The lid arrives early and lasts until roughly late April. The season between ice runs from about late April to late November. Spring is short and heavy here; autumn is longer and steadier. Rifle Lake fishes to that pattern most years.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. Overnight stays are possible half a mile away. Toilets show in mapping about half a mile away. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Where the road in crosses private land, ask first. Where parking is tight, arriving early solves most problems. Failing this one, try Lake Two, 0.7 miles away. None of that is settled for Rifle Lake in what we hold.
