Bright moon and an empty sky tonight, with a decent NW wind working the banks and pressure on the rise. Most of the action on Rail Lake should come off the shaded margin through bright spells. Little to get excited about, though the middle of the day holds a sliver of promise. Downsize everything and pick the calmest water.

Night
Set in Lake County, Rail Lake is a Minnesota water. The bank gives way to pine and birch. At 9 acres it is the sort of place you fish for an evening rather than a day. On size it sits at the modest end of our Lake County list. Head to Ely, 37 miles away, for anything you forgot. Grand Marais lies 37 miles off, Babbitt another 44 miles. One jurisdiction covers this water end to end.
Depth here is unknown, so count the lead down before committing. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Public occurrence data for Lake County names white sucker, yellow perch and northern pike. What holds for the county may not hold for this water. Work Rail Lake in sections rather than trying to cover it.
Between January at about 5°F and July at about 64°F, the water has a wide range to work through. Seasons are distinct, and each one fishes differently. After late April the shallows warm and the fish move up. Climate figures give an open season running late April to mid November. The shoulder weeks of the open season are the productive ones. Rail Lake runs to its own calendar within the local pattern.
Nothing we hold confirms whether access is permitted. There is camping recorded roughly 0.9 miles off. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Look for a notice board at the entrance. Some stretches are reserved and marked as such on the ground. Coot Lake sits 0.4 miles off and takes the overflow. Where Rail Lake is concerned, a local answer beats a written one.
