Stars out and no cloud tonight, with a steady NW wind and a rising glass. The productive water at Panhandle Lake will be around inflow corners and shaded margins. The forecast is against you; the middle of the day is the least bad option. Short, focused sessions beat a long grind today.

Panhandle Lake is one of the Lake County waters in Minnesota. The ground around here is lake country bush. Surface area runs to about 11 acres — small enough to read in one session. It is one of the smaller waters we list in Lake County. The closest town, Ely, is 37 miles distant. Grand Marais follows at 38 miles, then Babbitt at 45 miles. No border sits close enough to matter.
Depth here is unknown, so count the lead down before committing. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Lake County records list white sucker, yellow perch and northern pike among the fish reported. Read it as a county summary, not a water-by-water list. Fish Panhandle Lake where the bottom changes rather than where it looks deep.
The warmest month averages 64°F, the coldest about 5°F. A hard winter is normal, and the thaw brings a strong few weeks. Ice-out usually falls in late April, and the weeks after it fish hardest. Break-up near late April, freeze-up near mid November: that is the shape of an average year. The open run goes from the thaw to the freeze, and April through October covers most of it. Panhandle Lake fishes to that pattern most years.
We have no record of the rules that apply on this bank. There is camping recorded roughly half a mile off. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Parking is often the real limit rather than the bank itself. Rules for boats are stricter than rules for the bank in many places. If the gate is shut, Pan Lake at 0.5 miles is the nearest alternative. Where Panhandle Lake is concerned, a local answer beats a written one.
