Dull, settled light over the water, with a whisper of wind from the SW with pressure dropping. Whatever swims in Powers Lake should be near inflow corners and shaded margins. The productive run goes night into morning. Start on the obvious water and expand from there. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

Powers Lake belongs to Cook County, Minnesota. Around the bank it is lake country bush. At about 26 acres, a day is enough to walk the shoreline properly. The full circuit measures close to 1.1 miles on foot. It is high ground by Minnesota standards. Grand Marais at 19 miles is the nearest place to stop. Then Neebing, 33 miles, and Westfort, 45 miles. It lies deep inside the county rather than near an edge.
Without a survey to go on, judge depth from how the bank falls away. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. County-wide records name white sucker, yellow perch, northern pike and rainbow trout. What holds for the county may not hold for this water. Read Powers Lake before you fish it and the day goes better.
Long-run averages give July about 63°F and January about 6°F. A hard winter is normal, and the thaw brings a strong few weeks. The lid usually goes in late April, which opens the strongest weeks of the year. Climate figures give an open season running late April to mid November. From the thaw to midsummer the fishing improves week by week. Time your trip to Powers Lake by conditions rather than dates.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. No slipway, car park or made path shows up nearby in mapping, so treat access as rough. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Take the rules with you rather than trusting memory. Night access is frequently treated as a separate matter. If the gate is shut, Chester Lake at 0.9 miles is the nearest alternative. None of that is settled for Powers Lake in what we hold.
