Low, flat cloud sitting over the water, with a kind SW breeze on the water and a falling glass. Paine Lake should fish best around the calm side of the wind today. The strongest window runs from night into morning. Stay mobile and follow the activity. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

Paine Lake is listed under Cook County, Minnesota. Height above sea level is 1,654 feet. About 18 acres of surface, which puts the far bank inside easy sight. By elevation it is in the upper part of our Minnesota listings. You are 16 miles from Grand Marais. For a city, Thunder Bay is 51 miles off. This one is safely inside the county line.
Depth is unmeasured here, so let the shoreline guide you. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. County-wide records name white sucker, yellow perch, northern pike and rainbow trout. What holds for the county may not hold for this water. On Paine Lake the obvious spot is not always the productive one.
Temperature averages peak at 63°F in July and bottom out at 5°F in January. Four clear seasons, with a proper winter at one end. Count on hard cover from midwinter, and open water from late April. On the long-run averages the water opens up around late April and starts locking again about mid November. Late spring and early autumn carry the year between them. Anyone fishing Paine Lake regularly works to that calendar.
The access position is unclear from public sources. There is no mapped parking or launch nearby, which keeps numbers down. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Parking space is the usual limit rather than the bank itself. Fishing rules and camping rules are set separately here. Cyprinid Lake, 2.1 miles away, makes the obvious fallback. None of that is settled for Paine Lake in what we hold.
