An even grey lid over the water, with next to no ripple and the barometer on the way down. On Orange Lake, work points where shallow meets deep first. A hard day on paper; the night edges the rest. Scale down and fish slowly. Cooler water spreads fish back across the shallows.

Set in Itasca County, Orange Lake is a Minnesota water. The surface lies 1,394 feet up. With some 97 acres of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. Roughly 1.7 miles of bank means you can walk to a fresh area when one goes quiet. Nearest town is Cohasset, 13 miles off. Coleraine is 14 miles and Grand Rapids 15 miles. It sits well inside the county, so one set of rules covers it.
Nothing we hold settles how deep this runs. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Records held for Itasca County cover yellow perch, largemouth bass, northern pike, bluegill and black crappie. What holds for the county may not hold for this water. The near bank of Orange Lake is often the one people ignore.
Climate normals give 67°F for July and 4°F for January. A hard winter is normal, and the thaw brings a strong few weeks. The open season starts with the thaw, near enough mid April. Break-up sits around mid April on average, with the water closing again about late November. Right after break-up, and again as the nights sharpen, is when to go. That is the shape of the year on Orange Lake.
There is no clear statement anywhere on who can fish it. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Nothing is mapped in the way of a ramp or car park within a short radius. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Take the rules with you rather than trusting memory. Night access is frequently treated as a separate matter. Failing this one, try Big Horn Lake, 0.6 miles away. Rules at Orange Lake are worth checking on the day.
