Damp, showery conditions today, with flat calm through the day and the barometer heading up. Most of the action on Hill Lake should come off the weed line and any gaps in it. A hard day on paper; the night edges the rest. Scale down and fish slowly. Cooler water spreads fish back across the shallows.

Out in Itasca County, Minnesota, sits Hill Lake. The setting is mixed forest on every side. It measures about 47 acres, which is a comfortable size for bank fishing. The bank runs about 1.3 miles all the way round, so one visit can cover most of it. Cohasset sits 12 miles from the bank. Coleraine lies 13 miles off, Grand Rapids another 14 miles. No border sits close enough to matter.
No depth figure appears in our records, so the bank has to tell you. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Records held for Itasca County cover yellow perch, largemouth bass, northern pike and bluegill. The county list is broader than any single water. Hill Lake responds to conditions more than to tactics.
Expect July near 67°F and January near 4°F on the long-run figures. Winter closes the water for a while, and the reopening is worth catching. The lid arrives early and lasts until roughly mid April. On the long-run averages the water opens up around mid April and starts locking again about late November. The open run goes from the thaw to the freeze, and April through October covers most of it. Plan around that when you fish Hill Lake.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. You will be walking about half a mile from the nearest car park. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Where access is informal, keep it that way by behaving. Some stretches are reserved and marked as such on the ground. Little Bear Lake at 0.2 miles is the sensible second choice. What applies at Hill Lake may have changed since it was mapped.
