A closed sky with even light today, with a proper ripple driven from the ESE with the glass slipping lower. Whatever swims in Mud Lake should be near structure within a cast of the bank. A hard day on paper; the night edges the rest. Scale down and fish slowly. The autumn feed-up is on; baitfish areas are the key.

Mud Lake lies in Becker County, Minnesota. Height above sea level is 1,322 feet. Roughly 87 acres: a morning covers one end, an afternoon the other. The edge runs 1.4 miles or so, easy to work in an afternoon. Detroit Lakes lies 5.2 miles from the water. For a city, Fargo is 42 miles off. Other water within reach: Rider Lake about 0.9 miles, Loon Lake within 1.2 miles, Lake Melissa about 1.2 miles, Lake Sallie within 1.2 miles and Fox Lake about 1.6 miles. One jurisdiction covers this water end to end.
Without a survey to go on, judge depth from how the bank falls away. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Across Becker County, recorded fish include bluegill, largemouth bass, walleye and northern pike. Those are county-wide records, so not every one of them will be in this water. Anyone new to Mud Lake should walk it once before setting up.
Seasonal averages run from 5°F in January up to 69°F in July. Hard water is a season in its own right here. Ice-out usually falls in mid April, and the weeks after it fish hardest. Expect the water usable from around mid April until roughly late November. June through September is the settled part of the year, with the shoulders busier for fish. Plan any trip to Mud Lake around it.
Our records carry no access rule either way. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. There is a mapped landing stage half a mile away. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Ask in the nearest town if you are unsure. A polite question at the farm gate opens more banks than anything else. Rider Lake at 0.9 miles is the sensible second choice. Confirm before you fish Mud Lake.
