Low, flat cloud sitting over the water, with an easy breeze from the SSW with the glass slipping lower. On Kego Lake, work reed fringes and open pockets first. A broad window opens from night into morning. Commit to the pattern once the first fish shows. The autumn feed-up is on; baitfish areas are the key.

Kego Lake sits in Crow Wing County, out in Minnesota. This is pine and birch country. At some 288 acres it is far too large to cover on foot in a day. Shoreline length is close to 3.3 miles, and each section fishes a little differently. Few waters listed in Crow Wing County are bigger. Crosslake sits 7.8 miles from the bank. Breezy Point is 14 miles and Pequot Lakes 16 miles. The boundary is near enough that local access rules are worth double-checking.
The deepest measured water here is close to 23 feet. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Fish documented in Crow Wing County include largemouth bass, bluegill, yellow perch, northern pike and pumpkinseed. County records show what lives in the area; the local agency holds the water-by-water list. Anyone new to Kego Lake should walk it once before setting up.
The year swings from about 6°F in January to roughly 68°F in July. Cold locks it up for a good stretch each year. After mid April the shallows warm and the fish move up. Average temperatures cross freezing around mid April in spring and again near late November in autumn. September and October fish steadily right up to the freeze. On Kego Lake the same rules apply, with local timing.
Nothing we hold confirms whether access is permitted. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. There is no recorded infrastructure here; expect to find your own way in. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Parking is often the real limit rather than the bank itself. Some stretches are reserved and marked as such on the ground. Failing this one, try Mitchell Lake, 1.8 miles away. Nothing here settles the position at Kego Lake for certain.
