Clear overhead with good moonlight, with a whisper of wind from the W and pressure leaking away. The fish at Honker Lake are likely to sit near any hard bottom among the soft. Save your energy for the middle of the day. Start on the obvious water and expand from there. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

In Minnesota, Honker Lake falls inside Lake County. It sits at 1,742 feet above sea level. Around 47 acres of surface means several distinct areas to work. The full circuit measures close to 1.3 miles on foot. By elevation it is in the upper part of our Minnesota listings. The nearest place of any size is Grand Marais, 35 miles away. It is 78 miles to Thunder Bay, the nearest city. Rules here are straightforward: one county, one set of rules.
Depth here is unknown, so count the lead down before committing. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Records held for Lake County cover white sucker, yellow perch, northern pike, rainbow trout and walleye. These are county-wide records, so not all of them will be in this water. The near bank of Honker Lake is often the one people ignore.
Climate normals give 65°F for July and 5°F for January. Fishing here follows the temperature more than the calendar. The lid arrives early and lasts until roughly late April. From about late April to around mid November, expect open water on the long-run figures. From the thaw to midsummer the fishing improves week by week. Honker Lake runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. There is camping recorded roughly half a mile off. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Bank access can be seasonal on ground like this. Some ground is open by custom rather than by right, so tread carefully. Bingshick Lake, 0.4 miles away, makes the obvious fallback. Rules at Honker Lake are worth checking on the day.
