A grey, even sky over the water, with almost no wind to speak of and pressure easing off. Give shallow cover and weed edges the first hour at Crag Lake. The strongest window is the evening. Fish tidy and take what the day gives. Cold air keeps the water sluggish; scale everything down.

Crag Lake sits in Lake County, out in Minnesota. Around the bank it is mixed forest. Surface area is around 45 acres, which gives you real water without needing a boat. Around 1.6 miles of margin, front to back. Compared with other Minnesota water on our list, it sits high. Nearest town is Grand Marais, 34 miles off. Further out sit Ely (46 miles) and Babbitt (54 miles). No boundary runs near, so the county rules hold throughout.
We hold no survey for this water; read the slope of the shoreline instead. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Survey and observation records for Lake County include white sucker, yellow perch and northern pike. The county figures include rivers and lakes alike. At Crag Lake the first feature you find is worth twenty minutes.
Long-term averages put July at about 64°F and January near 4°F. The year runs cold to warm and back, with clear transitions. The lid usually goes in late April, which opens the strongest weeks of the year. Expect the water usable from around late April until roughly mid November. Right after break-up, and again as the nights sharpen, is when to go. Crag Lake runs to its own calendar within the local pattern.
The access position is unclear from public sources. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. No car park, ramp or path is recorded within easy reach of the shore. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Check locally before you travel, because a wasted drive is a long one. Access can change hands, so last year's answer may not hold. Green Lake, 0.3 miles away, makes the obvious fallback. Nothing on Crag Lake should be assumed from this page alone.
