Patchy cloud over the water after dark, with a mirror surface most of the day and pressure easing off. On Homme Lake, work the shallows early and the drop later first. The strongest window runs from the day. Stay mobile and follow the activity. Cooler water spreads fish back across the shallows.

Set in Polk County, Minnesota, this is Homme Lake. This is pine and birch country. It runs to roughly 131 acres — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. The edge covers about 3.5 miles, enough to hold several distinct areas. On our Polk County list it sits near the top for size. Fosston sits 4.7 miles from here and is the nearest stop. After that come Mahnomen at 16 miles and Bagley at 17 miles. It sits well inside its county, with no border complications.
Without a survey to go on, judge depth from how the bank falls away. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. County-wide records name yellow perch, brown bullhead, white sucker and northern pike. It is the county picture; the agency list is water-specific. Homme Lake gives up its fish to patience rather than distance.
Averages here run 68°F at the top of summer and 4°F at the bottom of winter. Winter shuts things down for a spell, then spring reopens them fast. Expect a solid lid for months and a thaw around mid April. From about mid April to around mid November, expect open water on the long-run figures. June through September is the settled part of the year, with the shoulders busier for fish. Homme Lake runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
The rules here are undocumented as far as public sources go. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. There is a slipway on the shore, half a mile from the water we list. For the pike, wire up and throw larger lures along the weed edges. Rules differ from one water to the next round here. Night access is frequently treated as a separate matter. Should this one be busy, Sand Hill Lake is 0.9 miles off. Confirm access to Homme Lake locally before you travel.
