Flat light and a covered sky today, with a stiffish breeze from the SW with pressure dropping. Activity on Gurneau Lake should centre on the first drop-off and weed lines. Set the alarm around the morning. Stay mobile and follow the activity. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

Gurneau Lake is one of the Beltrami County waters in Minnesota. Height above sea level is 1,198 feet. With some 48 acres of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. There is roughly 1.6 miles of shoreline here, which is a short walk end to end. Little Rock at 7.3 miles is the nearest place to stop. Fargo sits 98 miles out, and it is the nearest city worth the name. The nearest boundary is well away, so one set of rules covers the water.
No published figure covers depth, so learn it as you fish. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Across Beltrami County, recorded fish include walleye, yellow perch and northern pike. It is the county picture; the agency list is water-specific. Fish Gurneau Lake where the bottom changes rather than where it looks deep.
Between January at about 3°F and July at about 67°F, the water has a wide range to work through. A hard winter is normal, and the thaw brings a strong few weeks. The lid usually goes in mid April, which opens the strongest weeks of the year. The season between ice runs from about mid April to mid November. Fishing peaks soon after break-up and again before the cold returns. Gurneau Lake fishes to that pattern most years.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Nothing in the way of made access shows up nearby: no ramp, no car park, no path. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Ask in the nearest town if you are unsure. Barbless rules turn up on managed water more often than not. If the gate is shut, Blue Lake at 1.7 miles is the nearest alternative. The position on Gurneau Lake is worth confirming on the day.
